Passive Fire Protection – Fire Rated Products, Systems and Solutions

Mastafire Trade FAQs – What Builders Ask Us (All in One Place)

You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers.

Because let’s be real, passive fire gear isn’t the most exciting thing to shop for, and nobody wants to struggle guessing which collar or sealant to use. Or worse, buying the wrong stuff and holding up the job.

So we’ve put together a quickfire list of the most common things builders ask us. Straight from the counter.

Let’s jump in.

1. What products do I actually need for this job?

The most common question we get. And fair enough. Passive fire can be confusing, especially when you’re dealing with penetrations, wall types, or floor setups that all have different requirements.

Here’s the good news: if you’re not sure what to use, just give us a quick call or pop in with some basic info:

  • What’s the service? (PVC pipe, cables, copper, etc.)
  • What’s the substrate? (Speedpanel, plasterboard, concrete slab)
  • Is it new or retrofit?
  • Any space constraints?

With that, we can usually get you sorted with the exact system that will keep you compliant and pass certification. No guesswork needed.

2. Can I mix brands or fire-rated products on the same job?

Absolutely not.

Not because we’re trying to be difficult, but because passive fire systems don’t work like Lego. They’re tested as a complete setup: the collar, the sealant, the backing material, the wall or slab type, and the services going through it.

That whole combo gets put through fire tests and only then earns its rating. When you swap even one piece for a different brand, you’ve changed the system.

The new mix might still look fine on site, but under heat it can behave differently.

One sealant may expand faster than another. A wrap might char or shrink at a different rate. Adhesion can vary. Those tiny differences are exactly what fire tests are designed to catch.

So the issue isn’t “brand loyalty.” It’s that the rated result only applies to the tested combination.

Once you mix brands, the fire rating is no longer proven, and a certifier can’t sign it off with confidence.

It’s also a liability thing. If something ever went wrong, no manufacturer will stand behind a mixed system, and you’re the one holding the bag.

3. Do you sell tested systems or just the individual parts?

We sell both.

Some tradies know exactly what they need and just want a couple of intumescent wraps or a tub of mastic. Easy.

But if you’re chasing full compliance, we can also supply complete tested systems. That means collars, sleeves, backing rods, mastic, and anything else needed for a particular FRL and wall or floor setup.

We’ve got systems from Trafalgar, Promat, TBA Firefly and more. Just ask and we’ll help you cover all your bases.

4. Can I order online or do I have to come into a store?

Mastafire Trade is 100% online.

You can browse, compare, and order everything directly through our website. No need to visit a showroom or drive across town just to see what’s in stock, it’s all there at your fingertips.

All the fire-rated products we supply are listed with details and pricing. We keep it updated so you always know what’s available and what’s not.

If you’re placing a bulk order or need help choosing the right product, just send through an enquiry or reach out via our contact form. We’ll get back to you fast.

5. How quickly can I get materials delivered?

We deliver across Southeast Queensland and can usually get your order out quickly. Often same-day or next-day, depending on location and stock.

If you’re working to a tight schedule, let us know and we’ll do our best to meet it. We know how frustrating it is when a job stalls because one product’s missing.

There’s also click-and-collect if you want to grab it yourself.

6. What’s the difference between intumescent sealant and mastic?

Great question. Here’s the short version:

  • Intumescent sealant expands when exposed to heat. It’s designed to seal around services like pipes and cables during a fire.
  • Fire-rated mastic is used for joints and general sealing. It stays flexible but doesn’t expand like intumescent.

Different products are used in different applications. Just let us know where you’re applying it and we’ll sort you out.

7. What if I’ve already installed the wrong product?

It happens.

If the wrong product has been installed and it’s not part of a tested system, your certifier might knock it back. But we can usually help you find a retrofit fix to bring it into compliance.

Bring in some photos or details and we’ll do what we can to avoid unnecessary rework.

Worst case? We’ll help you plan a fast redo that gets it right and passes without drama.

8. Do you supply or ship outside of Southeast Queensland?

No, we don’t.

Mastafire Trade is focused exclusively on servicing Southeast Queensland. That includes Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, and surrounding regions.

We do not ship Australia-wide or support projects in other states.

If you’re outside of SEQ, we recommend reaching out to the manufacturers directly to find a distributor in your area.
